Start with San Juan, then widen the trip
Old San Juan is the natural starting point for many Puerto Rico vacations. It gives you walkable streets, forts, plazas, restaurants, bars, and the kind of color that makes the first day feel alive.
For beach convenience, Condado and Isla Verde are practical. For a broader trip, add time for Luquillo, El Yunque, the west coast, or smaller towns where the pace changes.
Food deserves its own plan
Puerto Rico is not only a beach trip. Plan for mofongo, lechon, fresh seafood, coffee, bakeries, kiosks, and late dinners. The food scene is part of how you understand the island.
Leave room for local recommendations. The best meal may be the one you find after changing plans, but it helps to know which neighborhoods or routes give you the strongest options.
Make day trips realistic
El Yunque, snorkeling, boat days, bioluminescent bay tours, and west-coast beaches can all be excellent, but they need realistic timing. Group your activities by region instead of crossing the island repeatedly.
A simple Puerto Rico itinerary might pair Old San Juan and beach time with one nature day, one food-focused evening, and one flexible day for the coast or a tour.
